Local SEO (Local Search Engine Optimization) is one of the primary tools we use to achieve Zero Risk Internet Marketing.
Let me first say that -- generally speaking -- we're not fans of SEO. I've done SEO work for many years and I've seen the value of it decline -- for most businesses. The costs have increased and the benefits decreased. It's just riskier and the return on investment (ROI) much more speculative than it used to be. And, I could talk for hours about that -- if you are interested give me a call and I actually love talking about this stuff.
But, it's not that simple. Certain kinds of SEO still works, produces a positive ROI, and always will. And is essential to do. Developing a comprehensive internet marketing strategy; creating quality content (text, images, video) and sharing that content in relevant places -- that's all still very important to do. But, building cheap and easy links to your website, which is what SEO used to be about -- that's a waste of time and money and could even be harmful to your search visibility.
The best SEO opportunities today (and for the foreseeable future) are in local search. That's where quality SEO work is most likely to pay dividends; likely to have a strong ROI.
Google is king of the mountain in terms of internet searches. Nearly 3/4 of searches on the web are done at Google. Fortunately, for local businesses, Google is doing lots of things to help them. So, every local business should have a Google Plus Local Business Page.
Look, Google is in a competition with Facebook over social media. Google Plus is Google's answer to Facebook. So, Google is doing lots and lots of things to encourage people (and businesses) to create and use Google Plus pages. If you do a local search for say "Washington D.C. Tax Attorney," at the top, or at least near the top of the page, you'll see a google map with dots on it and corresponding listings of the attorneys, and their website, the dots represent. Notice that each of them has a Google Plus page.
So, to play in this game -- obviously, you've got to have a Google plus page. Google will reward you for that and -- assuming you have good reviews and a quality website -- there is a good chance you will be ranked on the first page of Google search results and show up on the Google map for relevant local search terms. By being there, you will get free phone calls to your business or free visitors to your website -- visitors who are searching for your services.
And, other search engines, like Bing, Yahoo and doing similar things. They also have their own local business listings and you want to show up there as well.
OK, the bottom line is that it's now easier than ever for local businesses to show up for relevant local searches. It still takes attractive and logical website design; quality content -- text, images, graphics, video. You've got to be delivering something unique, useful and valuable to your website visitors. You've got to share your story with the world (including social media) and as a result naturally get quality links back to your website. All of this is what good SEO work is about.
So, it's not always easy. But, for many local search terms it is actually easier than it used to be to show up on page 1 of Google (and Yahoo and Bing) search results. You just have to give the search engines what they want.
